Drones, Beats and Radio Shack Means #GiftSmart Shopping

Who doesn’t like when holiday gifts arrive early! And normally, you just stick those gifts under the tree or save them to open at the appropriate time, but in this case, I needed to open the package right away. The funny thing is, I knew what the gift contained and who it was from. But that didn’t matter, I couldn’t wait to play…er…let my kids play with these #GiftSmart items from Radio Shack.

Underneath the appropriately red ribbon and nestled in the box were three items found at Radio Shack, specifically, the 2.4GHz RC Surveyor Drone ($59.99) and the Beats by Dr. Dre Pill 2.0 Wireless Speaker ($199.99) – both of these also appropriately bathed in a Radio Shack-esque red. Oh, and there was a set of AAA Radio Shack batteries ($5.59).

My 10 year old daughter immediately took to piloting the Surveyor Drone. In order to make things festive, I connected the Beats by Dr. Dre Pill with Pandora’s holiday music channel and let her gain her piloting wings. Not to get sidetracked by this speaker, but it’s really easy to pair via Bluetooth, has quite good sound quality (bass and treble), and with the 2.0 version, you can charge a device via USB. Later on during the Thanksgiving holidays, I placed the speaker on various bookshelves around the house to fill rooms with musical cheer.

The Drone’s battery came with a relatively full charge and but my daughter needed a little instruction from me on how to control the drone. The most important thing is calibrating the four propellers. Another recommendation that I have is to have a larger room, relatively free of obstacles for the initial few flying attempts. We had quite a few crashes and lost one of the small propellers under a sofa at one point. Luckily, the drone comes with 4 extra propellers for just this type of emergency.

At one point, my daughter inadvertently targeted the photographer (me) during a take-off!

These two products are just a couple of examples of Radio Shack’s #GiftSmart shopping experience. You might actually be surprised at some of the products, gadgets and devices that you can find. Just as a side note here, my step-mom recently spilled some coffee on her MacBook Pro keyboard which rendered some of the keys inoperable (particularly, ones that were used for her password to log in). It was a bit late at night, but we rushed over to our local Radio Shack to get an external USB keyboard so that she could log in. We found one at the store and they even let us test out to see if the keyboard allowed the login. It did. And then lo and behold, we discovered an Apple section and were able to get an official Apple external keyboard. I didn’t even know Radio Shack had official Apple products apart from having some good deals on iPhones and iPads.

But I digress a bit. The point is, your local Radio Shack can be a life-saver for technology emergencies but also for your holiday shopping needs like interactive toys or innovative electronics. There are some good #GiftSmart deals to be had as well and you can also take a look at the newspaper weekly ad insert digitally (in case you don’t get one of those old fashion newspaper things). And remember, Radio Shack has free ground shipping on most products and will even do some price-matching for you. And if your local store doesn’t have the product you are looking for, they will ship it for free from their online store.

And in case you forget about Radio Shack there to help you with the #GiftSmart shopping, you may see some signage at your local movie theater, which my daughter happily posed for!

  1. These are some interesting points raised in this article. The way technology is being used today in conjunction with software is heading towards a new classification of gadgets all together. the ability now through social media to instantly communicate ideas in a open source arena for people to build upon each others ideas for a greater purpose of product design is being lost in the battles between corporations and intellectual property. Having software seamlessly paired with electronic devices is where the future of technology is headed.
