Expanding my Content Wings – Writing for Man of the House & Babble

You may of noticed that there’s been a slight slowdown in content on HighTechDad.com. This isn’t because I haven’t been writing, quite to the contrary. It’s actually because I’ve been spreading my wings a bit and now I’m writing on a couple of other sites. I love writing, the hardest thing is finding the time and topics to do so. On HighTechDad, I am very backlogged on my reviews and other articles. Now, on two other sites, I’m “forced” to follow a bit more of an editorial calendar than I impose on my own site.

I don’t get paid to write on HighTechDad.com. Sure, I make some money from advertising or affiliate programs, but it is definitely not enough to quit my day job. Yes, I do get to keep many of the items I review (and I fully disclose that  but given that it is an even playing field after that, whether I keep a product or not doesn’t affect my review). But now, I have some new editors cracking the content whip over my head and helping to fund my kids’ increasingly expensive activities.

But let me set the record straight here…it is very hard to make a living solely writing content. Bloggers don’t get paid enough, at least in my opinion, for the amount of work that they have to do to create an article that is worth reading. Sometimes it is really hard to get those content juices flowing and be “creative on demand.” I love writing so while at times this feels like a chore, I really enjoy the end result.

So what are the sites that I’m contributing content to? ManoftheHouse.com and Babble.com. On the Man Of the House site (MotH for short), most of my articles are and will be focused on technology and how to come at tech from a dad’s perspective. The content should be, however, generic enough to appeal to most. It’s pretty similar to much of the content you might find on HighTechDad.com.

On Babble, who was acquired by Disney the day I started writing, it’s in a new section of the site called “Dadding” which has daily writing from 4 different “daddy bloggers” (ooh I HATE that term) – let’s say “dads who are bloggers” or “dad writers” instead. I’m one of the 4 dad writers. My writing there is more focused around parenting but will have an occasional tech post. Oh, and you can find a feed of my Babble posts in the sidebar of HighTechDad.

As I think it is important to share my writing, as there may be topics or subjects that may not appear on this site, I’m going to start posting article summaries on Fridays or over the weekend. On HighTechDad, I’m still going to be focused on the regular content that you find here, how technology products and devices can integrate into the family environment, as well as some How-to’s and opinion pieces. The other sites will have a lot of other content, different than what you will find here.
