Shaving Body Hair BELOW the Neck Line, Wait, What?! – Norelco Bodygroom Pro

HTD-Norelco-BodyGroom-Pro-34

I have reviewed and tested a few shavers in my time, and I sort of view a shaver as a commodity. My face simply cannot handle razor blades, so I always go with an electric shaver. I have been shaving this way for years. Well, recently I was approached by the Norelco team to write a review of a shaver that is a bit different in that, it’s an electric shaver for everything below your neckline.

Uh…ok, I said in my briefing. I had never really thought about shaving anything other than my face or neckline.

It’s the oddest thing. I heard a comedian (John Bishop) recently who commented on how as you grow older, the hair moves from the top of your head to other parts of your body, like in your ears, in your nose and on your back. I laughed when I heard that. But upon reflection, I realize that it’s kind of true (although thankfully, my hair is not really thinning). If you want to watch the comedy routine, you can see it here but do note, it is uncensored so might not be appropriate for some audiences.

As the summer months came around, I thought about being shirt-less in a public environment like the pool and (embarrassingly) realized that hairs were starting to sprout on my back. Geez, too much information? Sorry! But this is a reality that many males face. However, there are other use cases where having body hair might not be optimal. For example, if you are cyclist, you will definitely want to consider shaving your legs. This is because if you happen to crash on the road, having hairy legs can actually hinder the healing and can also rip your skin in the crash itself. Can you say “Road Burn?” Let’s also consider the wind resistance. Similarly, competitive swimmers feel that there is an advantage to having a clean-shaven body to make them more streamlined in the water.

But for me, it was that “eeew dad, you have hairs growing out of your back” moment. Grumble. Yes, as a dad, I am aging, and yes, those weird hairs are migrating around my body.

So I enlisted the help of my youngest daughter and grabbed an old face shaver of mine and had her go to work on my back. Do note, I don’t have a gorilla-hair-type back, but just enough hair to actually want to do something about it. After a few minutes, everything was shaved off. (Remember, once you start shaving, hairs seem to come back faster than ever!)

Then I got the call…from Norelco…”would you like to try a body shaver called the Norelco Bodygroom Pro, and do you feel comfortable talking about body hair?” HA! I was ready for the challenge.

Let’s talk a bit about the Norelco Bodygroom Pro. It doesn’t look like any other shaver on the market. For starters, it has two shaving heads: one to cut through the bushy hairs (like on your legs) and one to smooth out the “whiskers” once you have trimmed everything down.

Billed as the only “all-in-one” body groomer, the Bodygroom Pro definitely has the features to say that:

  • 5 length settings for different body hair length – the larger head can be adjust to meet the hairiest of foes or be dialed back for those not so hairy areas
  • Pivoting head for comfort – the contours of your body are no match for the head adjustments, getting you a close shave
  • Minimizing skin irritation – using a hypo-allergenic metal shaving foil, you minimize burns and rashing
  • Quick charge for a long use – 1 hour gives you 50 minutes of shaving
  • Waterproof – use (and clean) in the shower
  • Cordless design – put the shaver in the charger and then go cordless to do your shaving

Let’s talk about usage. For the most part, the Bodygroom Pro is pretty intuitive. The one exception was trying to figure out the proper way to seat it in the charging base, but after trying different angles, I finally got it to work.

Once charged, you are ready to mow through the mounds of body hair that you may have. While I did get my daughters to test it out again on my back (which seemed to work really well – they frequently freaked out about the amount of hair that it actually mowed off – meaning the more “fuzzy hair”), I thought that the product might be better demonstrated with some thinker hair, so I grabbed my dog – JUST KIDDING! I decided to shave a bit of the hair near my shin and ankles.

First I used the body hair shaver portion to cut it all very close.

Then I got it nice and close using the pivoting head portion (perfect way to test how it contours).

This is the end result – a nice bald spot on my ankle!

For cleaning, you can just hold the razors under the faucet to clean them out. Now I have a weird bald spot near my shin. Ah…the things I’ll do for a review!

HighTechDad Ratings

Having never used a body groomer or razor before, it’s a bit difficult to compare this against other ones. I do know how face shavers work through and I would say that this is a better option than using one of those to shave your body hair. For starters, you don’t run the risk of having a face shaver rip the longer hairs out of your skin (ouch!) since you use the body hair portion first. Then you get nice and close with the other portion.

At a retail price of $69.99, if you are a hairy guy, you might want to check the Norelco Bodygroom Pro out. Even better, you can currently get it on Amazon for about $50.

  1. Hi
Yes , Philips BodyGroom is perfect , now it’s more than 3 years that I use it (at first the previous model) , it doesn’t hurt your skin and shaves smoothly ,
but you should only use it for some important and bushy parts of body because as you said shaved parts begin to grow more fast more lengthy more dark colored and more thick …
And there is one thing that I can’t understand why !!! Philips strongly recommend not to use it for face and head !!!
