For the month of November, I grew facial hair. I wasn’t trying to make my wife upset nor prevent my kids from kissing me because I was too scruffy. It was to have a public show of support for Movember. Movember is a movement that was created to raise awareness of various male cancers like prostate or testicular cancer during the month of November. And during that time, men around the world grow mustaches or facial hair. I cheated a bit and grew a goatee but still, I had several people ask me about my facial hair and why I was growing it.

But now, November is over, and I am once again, clean shaven – my wife isn’t upset (at least about my facial hair) and my kids are back to giving me kisses. There was a great ending to the story in that during the last few days, Philips Norelco offered to help our Movember team out. The team I was on consisted of members of: Dad 2.0, Man of the House (which I write for), NYC Dads Group, DadCentric and DadLabs. As our facial hair started getting really out of control, Norelco sent us some care packages (Philips Norelco Qt4070 Turbo Vacuum Beard, Stubble and Moustache Trimmer Pro and the Philips Norelco 1290x/40 SensoTouch 3d Electric Shaver).

As part of the gift, we were asked to record us shaving off all of the facial hair that we had grown over the month, and video tape it so that it could be compiled and shown on Stache-Tacular. You can now see many of the videos over there.

I wanted to make sure that my family got to participate in my shave-off, so I had my two youngest daughters get creative in determining what we would do and then actually do it. Below is the result (also available directly on YouTube):

I’m a big fan of electric shavers actually, because my skin is just a bit too sensitive for razorblades. I actually have been using a Norelco for many, many years so it was nice to get an “upgrade”. As I don’t usually grow beards, I don’t have too much experience with a beard trimmer, but I do have a trimmer that I have used before so I do have a bit of an idea about what I like and what I don’t. The Turbo Vacuum Trimmer Pro has two features that I really like: 1) you can easily dial in the length that you want the trimmer to cut at, and it shows this length on the LCD screen and 2) it has a built in vacuum that captures all of the hair into a container so that you don’t leave hairs all over your sink. Those two items alone are great! This trimmer is also rechargeable and gives you a readout about how much time you have left.

The SensoTouch 3D Electric Shaver is awesome as well. Not only does the head pivot well around the curves of your face, it is lightweight and fits nicely into your hand. It has battery charge level display and the one that we got actually has 2 charging bases. The first base is smaller and more for travelling while the other actually has a motor in it and the base is designed to pull the head of the shaver down into a special liquid solution (“Jet Clean Solution”) that thoroughly and automatically fully cleans the heads. Do note, you can also manually clean the heads of the shaver by holding it under running water and flipping open the heads.

The SensoTouch 3D is a wet/dry shaver which means that you have the option to use shaving cream and water or just do it dry. The screen indicates how much shaving time is left on the battery as well.

The ratings below are for the SensoTouch 3D Electric Shaver because I have actually used it now for a few days. The Beard & Moustache Trimmer did a great job in terms of trimming down my facial hair down to a point where I could use the SensoTouch to finish the job. As I mentioned, I have used a Norelco shaver for many years. The SensoTouch definitely feels like an upgrade over the older shaver that I have. I particularly like the form and the fact that it can automatically clean the heads in the motorized base without me having to do it each and every day. And, as you can see in the video above, my kids had no problem using it so it definitely is family friendly.

The MSRP on the SensoTouch 3D is $249. But, during the holidays, Norelco has a Holiday Rebate promotion running called “Upgrade Your Shave” which can save you some additional money.
