So it is pretty obvious to me that I’m not the only guy who struggles during the romantic times of Valentine’s Day. For Episode #9 of Cast of Dads, we decided that it would be appropriate to record our podcast on Valentine’s Day itself. Well, it proved to be an interesting podcast filled with awkward silences, proving the fact that when you get a bunch of dads together to talk about things romantic, it becomes a bit challenging at times, hence the awkward silences as we moved out of our “comfort zones”. We are (obviously) much more at home discussing gadgets or parenting from a dad’s perspective and much less versed in the roses and chocolates dialog. I was recording en route to the AT&T Pro-Am Golf Tournament (thanks to AT&T who got my family some complimentary tickets) which was part of my “romantic” gift to my wife and kids. I was looking to give a gift of a “change of scene” and get them all to the beach to enjoy the amazing scenery and weather.
In this episode of Cast of Dads, we tended to slip more into our “areas of expertise” of being the protective dad, the guy who likes power tools and finding the perfect movie for both sexes. But that isn’t all. The topics we discussed included:
- Hanes #ComfortCrew Trip to Disney
- Chocolate Roses from Edible Arrangements
- The definition of “bridge and tunnel crew”
- Eating out on Valentine’s Day
- Our continued love of Modern Family
- Surf N’ Turn Tradition
- Baby Proofing Your Marriage
- Avoid a Valentine’s Massacre
- Not the Normal Valentine’s Day
- Nothing Says Happy Valentine Like Power Tools
- Kids copy you when it comes to love
- Evolution of the little heart candies
- Romantic Movies That Guys Can Watch
- Love Actually, The Ugly Truth, True Romance & Edward Scissorhands
- Application to Date My Daughter
- The “curse” of daughters

In the podcast, I refer to a scene in Bad Boys II where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are meeting the young man who is going out on a date with Martin’s daughter (in the movie) and Will Smith is playing an “ex-con” (both are cops). I bought the movie pretty much just for this scene! (WARNING – I tried to find a version of this that did not have profanity, but didn’t have much success. BE WARNED: stereo types, swearing and some funny stuff going on in the video below.) But it is still a classic!
Don’t you wish you could handle dating in that way? Well, I probably won’t be able to pull that off, however, the “Application to Date My Daughter” comes close. It is something that I found on the web and reworked a bit and has been heavily downloaded from my site.
Cast of Dads is a group of podcasting and blogging dads who gather to gab about fatherhood. The cast of dads includes C.C. Chapman, Jeffrey Sass, Max Kalehoff, Michael Sheehan, and Brad Powell, who collectively represent 13 kids from the youngest of babies to full grown adults. Each of them brings a unique perspective to being a father.
HTD says: Now that the “mushy” stuff is done, we can get back to geeking out and being a dad in the process. Be sure to subscribe to our Podcast on iTunes and give it some comments & ratings! And send us some questions!

Dude, that scene from Bad Boys is well worth the awkward silences of our Podcast. That was freaking hysterical. I am tempted to show it to my daughter and tell her I am memorizing the routine for her next date! LOL.
